[Libreoffice-qa] Online update in 3.6

Hi Klaus-Juergen, all,

I have enabled the online update service for the 3.6 line now too - can
you please test?  To test, please install the 3.6 Beta1, and choose
'Help' -> 'Check for Updates...' - it should offer you the Beta2 :-)

Please report back any issues.  Thank you in advance!

All the best,
Kendy

Oh!  A small glitch, it really should work now :-) - can you please
check?

I tried some minutes ago, and on MacOS X 10.6.8, it works fine -- it
offers me Beta 2, and even selects the right (German) download page. Thanks!

Ah, I have missed your mail, so I did not use the patch. Anyway, we will
need the second part later this week if 3.5.5-rc3 is final.

Re: [Libreoffice-qa] Online update in 3.6

In reply to this post by Jan Holesovsky
Hi Kendy, all

Isn't there some way for you to create a script that runs daily and checks if the file that is on
http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/pre-releases/
is already uploaded to some reference mirror (meaning that it was already announced)?

Then the script would update the information on the update check engine...

This could also apply to stable releases (thus moving another step for people being allowed to choose development updates or just stable updates)

Maybe this idea is stupid and there is a better way to automate this...

And, no Michael (et al), I don't have a patch or code to provide. This is just an idea/suggestion. If it is not welcome, just ignore it.

Pedro

If we want to release 3.6.0.4 as stable we should check the online
update before. There is still no online update to 3.6.0.4.

I am sorry, it has been a terribly busy week :-(  Fixed now, the update
to RC4 should be offered.  Thanks again for the testing!

No problem. Maybe we/you can do such a script as Pedro mentioned to
relieve you for this point.

Hi,

the update string is somewhat fuzzy though: for me it says I have
3.6.0.2 installed, and the update is 3.6.0 RC4. I know that the laste
digit is the RC number,  but still I think it would be nicer if same
numbering scheme was used for both version numbers.

Hi,

I did a quick test and recommendations weem to work in a perfect way:
- 3.5 users should update to 3.5.5
- 3.6 testers should update to 3.6.0.4

The version info in the updater dialog IMHO is incomplete:
The Version with what I tested is correctly shown as 3.6.0.0.beta3, but
the recommended download shows 3.6.0 RC4, what is not wrong, but the
complete Version name is 3.6.0.4.

I do not know whether there is an agreement how to call those versions,
I understood that we avoid "RC" and "Release" anywhere except as
additional information in the Bugzilla Version pickers.

Best regards

Rainer

I plan to remove the RC information from there when the 3.6 is final,
and will present just 3.6.0 in the update dialog.  I think the testers
of the pre-release versions know what is going on, and the real users
will not see that, so I hope we are good :-)

All the best,
Kendy

Remove manually?

Wouldn't it be easier to have a table on the server like

Version RC
3.5.4.1 True
3.5.4.2 False
etc
3.6.0.4 True

When 3.6.0.4 (or any RC) changes to Release you just need a script that compares the CRC or MD5 or whatever of the RC to the Stable build and changes True to False.

This would also allow a user which hasn't updated his 3.5.4.1 build to get some information. E.g.

"The installed version is LibreOffice 3.5.4.1 which is a Release Candidate
The latest stable release for the 3.5 branch is version 3.5.5.3
The latest release candidate for the 3.5 branch is version 3.5.6.1
The "bleeding edge" release candidate is version 3.6.0.4

(why do you insist on hiding the last digit in the Update dialog???)

My suggestion is that someone who is running an RC version (checked against the list on the server) is probably interested in other RCs. However this could be manually changed in some setting?

Just more thoughts... I hope someone finds them interesting enough...

Regards,
Pedro
