New Conference and Challenge banners on libreoffice.org home page

Hi Design guys,

Charles Schulz recently requested a couple of links/banners on the
libreoffice.org home page linking to the Challenge and Conference
sites. After seeing that there were no proposals, I went ahead and
produced a couple, which you might like to check out.

Basically I hacked and re-invented some of that beautiful artwork
produced from work by Paulo José and Nikash Singh for the original
funding Challenge.

A big thank you to you both, guys, for having made the .svg files
available. I really loved your original work.

If anyone has something better to offer than what I've posted, or if
you feel that any changes are needed, feel free to jump in and replace
them, or to comment.

HTH.

I "only" see the banners on the web page:
http://www.libreoffice.org/
Do you have some source on the wiki or so? So some one else can play it.

My first thought,s when I saw it, were:
Many black labels

Can you try to inverse it to have a white background for comparison?

Sure, I'll put the files up on the Design wiki today.

Well, it's a light-colored page, so the dark banners contrast and
stand out well... I could do white ones, for instance, so that people
can put them on other web pages and give us publicity... Maybe wait
and see what kind of feedback comes in from others first? But, if
encouraged, I'll sure do as you suggest.

Re: New Conference and Challenge banners on libreoffice.org home page

1. since the banners are really close to the LibO logo on the top of the
page, i'd not use it on the banners.
2. the space you can save by doing this could be used to make the text more
readable (especially the challenge-banner isn't readable really well)
3. perhaps you should use the same font for both banners

The reason I included the logo was so that the banners are good for
use by other people wanting to give us publicity and put these banners
on their own websites...

Re: New Conference and Challenge banners on libreoffice.org home page

okay, so maybe you could do a second version for the libO homepage and make
this one available for others on the wiki.
are the svgs of these already on the wiki?

The SVGs will be on the wiki later today. I'll work on a light-colored
version as soon as I have time (this week), but can we maybe leave
them as they are and wait for more feedback over the next few days?
That way we'll get a broader range of opinion?

The discussion on the website list suggested not to integrate the link
to the conference site as banners, but in the news area. (Christian,
Christoph, Charles - asking for banners until the news section is active
-, and myself)

Unfortunately nobody was able (or interested) to bring the news area to
life (even if Christian integrated it in the main site's SilverStripe),
so we have now the banners on the homepage. I personally dislike them,
but as I can't spend the time to improve them, I can't ask for removal.

There have already been some comments by Klaus-Jürgen ("please replace
them by light colored ones, because the black ones don't fit our general
branding scheme") and Tobias ("please upload banners without replication
of the LibreOffice logo directly at the side of the existing logo and
keep the other ones for external sites").

As David seems not to have the time to integrate these comments in his
design, perhaps someone else could step in.

In this case I'd like to see the official conference logo instead of one
with a different Eiffel Tower - one more point about consistency and
branding language...

Sorry, that I can't step in actively :-(

Best regards

Bernhard

Yep, and I thought it would be nice to have the more official wording
from the target pages as well ... so here are some quickly made
proposals that should work a bit better. Especially since we currently
take away much attention from the download button.

Some comments:
      * the size of the logos is the same like the current ones - so
they may serve as drop-in replacements (and nothing else)
      * the motif logo has been added (but needed to be tweaked to not
        outperform the remaining content)
      * the structure of the SVG file is prepared for adding
        translations

You find all files here:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/FoundationChallenge#LibreOffice_Frontpage

Or directly ...
... the donation banner:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/cgi_img_auth.php/0/09/LibOWebsiteBanners_Donation_English.png
... the conference banner:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/cgi_img_auth.php/e/e5/LibOWebsiteBanners_Conference_English.png

It would be cool (if anybody thinks the design is an improvement) to add
these files to the website - I miss the time and I lack some experience
here. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Christoph

I think these should go out for external use also and I'll update the
wiki pages (with the html snippet linked back to the donation page)
appropriately, if you don't mind.

Guys,

Do as you feel best. I'm busy on other work for the project right now,
so I'll leave it to the person with the strongest impulse to step
forward and do the best work in their judgment to benefit the project.

Hi David,

Right and exactly, just as you have been good enough to do. This isn't
either or, it's cumulative effort, yes.

I'd like to see the graphics you put together for the web site available
for folks to use also. Are the images available on the wiki? Hmm, does
that even matter, or put another way - do we want to keep dishing things
up from the wiki only?

Thanks,

Drew

I'll put the files up on the wiki in the next day or so, because
that's our principal drop point and reference point for stuff right
now. But I'd recommend us creating a page under the About Us section
of libreoffce.org and showcase the graphics posted on the wiki, once
they're considered to be fit for public use (i.e. an "img" tag swiping
the graphic from the wiki rather than a copy stored directly on the
CMS).

<off-topic> Maybe you guys would like to check out the merits of
Alfresco (http://alfresco.libreoffice.org) as a possible storage depot
for stuff in the near future, and give consideration to the possible
advantages? </off-topic>

So, I've added the banners to the website home page and saved the
changes - but did not publish them yet. Although I do have the rights to
do so, it would be great if anybody could check this in Silverstripe and
publish the changes. These are my first steps with Silverstripe and I
don't want to screw up the main page ;-) Thanks in advance!!!

Two more comments:
      * I had to adapt the size of one of the graphics (from 440px to
400px) because the page is asymmetrical. I did not notice that
        before ...
      * I found a small "alternative text" error for one of the graphics
        (should be resolved)
      * The donations page is still called "challenge..." - shouldn't we
        adapt this?

> I think these should go out for external use also and I'll update the

Well, here you are the master :-) I'm happy if we can share those
graphics with others - if you have an idea how I can help, then please
tell me. I think the original idea of Bernhard to collect all "agreed
upon" artwork in one place might be helpful here as well.

Have a nice day!

Cheers,
Christoph

Howdy Christoph,

hmm - well I've had an account on the main site for a long while and
never used it..looking at the draft it looks good. I can push the
publish button, what could go wrong..

I think maybe we should look at some type of banner campaign management
here. There will always be something deserving of some mention and a
continuing need for the call for donations - so something that cycles
banners makes sense, not cycle as in the screen shots cycling during a
session, rather something akin to an ad banner campaign manager where we
want to display different banners on some rotating session basis.

Anyway, just a little quick checking and as expected the idea has been
addressed in the SilverStripe world already - but that is for another
day and I'll push a different email on the idea to the list with some
links to SilverStripe resources that I find.

Gk - will handle it.

I think that is actually going along reasonably well, thanks in large
measure to J-K's work.

Thank you! Sometimes it helps me to have "another pair of eyes" to look
after what I've done ... before something important breaks :-)

Cheers,
