Re: [Libreoffice-ux-advise] Inclusion of Gnome Tango Icons?

Hi everyone,
I've received a response from Lapo, who seems to be ok with relicensing the
icons. He also offered to design any icons we need to avoid feeling like a
mishmash icon set.
Here's the message:

Hi Marek,
I think every icon here is made by Jakub or myself, so thumbs up for
relicensing this stuff whatever license LibreOffice needs. Also feel
free to ask any custom icon you may need, I'm a LibreOffice user and I
hate mishmash icon sets :-)

Ciao
Lapo

This is great news. If we have a willing icon designer, we can actually start
to meassure the quality of our existing icons, respecting our international
users. This way we can step-by-step increase the quality by replacing the
worst icons and hence ensuring a consistent icon quality over time.

We would need a small team of perhaps 2 or 3 people who are willing to work on
this topic over a longer period of time to get some real results here. We
would have to work closely with the localization teams and we would need the
icon designers willing to support us in this process, of course. I am willing
to mentor the process and help you to do it efficiently. I can provide the
needed tools (aGPL) including the hosting of the service.

What do you guys think? Anyone interested?

Cheers,
Björn

I'm not sure if I would see Lapo as a willing icon designer -- he's
involved in other projects, most notably Gnome, and his time and energy is
limited (at least that's the way I see it).

I agree with replacing the worst icons first, though, of course.

Why the localization teams? Both Gnome and Tango discourage against
localizing icons. Rather, to represent text, they use the "A" glyph, which
is the first letter in the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets.
It has been thoroughly tested in a variety of projects using the Tango
icons, like LibreOffice, Inkscape, GIMP, etc.

What service? What do you actually propose to do? How would the team work?

Hello!

I am a newbie here, but I like the idea of working on icons.  My background
includes some useful skills: crafting objectives, designing measurement
scales, and evaluating outcomes.  Let me know how I can help!

Re: [Libreoffice-ux-advise] Inclusion of Gnome Tango Icons?

Hello, part 2...
My background also includes several design classes (at the hobbyist level),
and concerns about accessibility, so I see myself as an informed
layperson.

I have reviewed what discussions are available to me (not much, just one
page on the DF wiki:Design/Tango refresh 3.6; and one Nabble discussion:
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/New-icons-in-Tango-td3905093.html#none)
but I would like to know more about the history and the decision to use
Tango icons before I jump in to discussions.

Thanks!

Re: [Libreoffice-ux-advise] Inclusion of Gnome Tango Icons?

Hi Anne,
Right now, Stefan Knorr (aka. Astron) is in charge of replacing some of our
current Tango icons with newer ones from the Gnome project. He's currently
making a list of icons we could replace outright and icons that need to be
tweaked, and, until that's done, there's no work to be done on this topic
yet.
I'm not sure what the original reason behind making Tango icons default was
-- I can only speculate that it was done to distance the project a bit from
OpenOffice.org and be more in line with other open-source projects, many of
which have also opted to use Tango icons.

If you'd like to help out with the current icons, you'll have to ask Astron
or wait a bit until he releases a list of things to work on.
There was also an initiative to create a new simpler set of icons, but it
has been shelved until an experienced icon designer shows up and takes
charge of it:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Whiteboards/Flat_icon_set . If
you'd like to lead that, you're welcome to.

If you'd like to help out in general, take a look at the things we're
working on right now:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design#Our_Current_Endeavors . If
you're more of a visual designer than an interaction designer, you might be
interested in our call for templates:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Call_for_Templates .

You also mentioned being interested in accessibility -- you might want to
subscribe to the accessibility mailing list by sending an empty message to
