Redesigning the Design page

Our design page is the first page most of our potential members will come
across, so it should make a good impression as well as provide a good
summary of what we do, what we're currently working on, and a clear way to
join. Our current design page [1] doesn't really fit those requirements, so
I believe it's time to redesign it.

I've submitted a rough draft to
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Mirek2#LibreOffice_Design_Team --
tell me what you think. The "Resources" section is meant to host links to
items that could be of great value to our designers, but there should be a
limit on the number of links so that the list doesn't get overwhelming. I
was thinking something along the lines of the Android Design Downloads page
[2] (only with downloads for open-source software) or the Downloads section
on my blog [3].

Re: Redesigning the Design page

Perfect, i had the same idea not long ago (when i joined) but i
wasn't sure if it was a good idea to post it at the moment.

Your proposal is ok, but, since it's a simple wiki page, it's
quite... designless. I think it should be like an infography,
with significative images explained with cool phrases, so
we make it easy for people to quickly get around.

I could work on a proposal of this style, but it would only
be a pencil sketch, or a rough svg, i'd need someone to
actually make it pretty for digital view.

I think it should have 3 sections.
-Get involved! : info on how to join our chats and wiki.
-The circle of work: The whole process of Project>
  proposals>discussion>problems>discussion>result>
  project.
-Other stuff: links to pages like the UI guidelines, your
  blog, etc.

I'll start working on a sketch of how it could look like, just
please tell me if it is something that can actually happen.
(I think it can, the "Get involved" page could redirect to it)

I also was going to propose that we do this. just seemed a bit run down and
useless now. I think the kick-off is done now don't you?

Re: Redesigning the Design page

Yes, but people is always trying to come in, i entered
past week and it was a bit frightening, with you guys
talking about HIG's, workflows and stuff. I just started
tossing crazy ideas to make things easier for me, it's
actually quite simple as it is.

Just today i heard of three new people that want to
help, and don't know how to, i think that, when they
got here they should have already known how things
work, that's what the new design page should work for.

I agree.

The disadvantage of having your main design page on a wiki is that there's
a limit to the things you can do with graphics.
We'd still want our text to be indexable and organized into a table of
contents, so we're forced to use the default headings and there's nothing
we can do with typography.

That means we're confined to using graphics and tables for decoration. I've
updated my proposal with more color [1]. :)

If it can be implemented in a wiki, then yes, it can happen.

Re: Redesigning the Design page

Could I update the design page with
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Mirek2#LibreOffice_Design_Team for
now?
I feel like the sooner we implement something, the sooner volunteers can
come.

Re: Redesigning the Design page

Much better, thanks Mirek!

Is there a way you can put this [1] on a side? it's pretty
cool and it explains the whole point of this.
You could edit it to take out the "donate now" and
"Challenge continues" part.

What i was thinking was in hosting that outside of the wiki,
make it a tini tiny minisite.

While it looks great, it just takes away attention from the important
elements on the page. People should be looking at the "Get involved"
section.

Making it separate from the wiki would have its advantages and
disadvantages. It would allow us to do a lot more things with design, but
it would also make us inconsistent with all the other projects which host
their homepage on the wiki, it would make moving from the design homepage
to the sections hosted on the wiki awkward, and it wouldn't allow everyone
to update its contents (which could be a problem if the people responsible
for it stopped contributing). Not to mention that it would be a ton of
work...
I don't think having it on the wiki is that much of a problem.

Sorry, it's back. I just renamed and reshuffled a few things. I also
removed the Kick-off, since it's not relevant any more.

Re: Redesigning the Design page

Ok because I kinda like it. Though I can still navigate the wiki with out
it, I like using that bar.

Only a short hint:
The "Our current Endeavors" are all UI. There is no VI.
Ok, VI isn't the most you all work on (even not your hobbyhorse ;-) )
but one point should be on the first page e.g. Marc's mentioned web
banners/buttons.
