what is the "small device format importer"

I was looking into my Ubuntu "Applications" menu and I found a listing
in "other" called
"LibreOffice 3.4 Small Device Format Importer"

I currently run 3.4.6 on Ubuntu 10.04/GNOME.

Originally this launcher was hidden, or not checked to be viewed.  So I
decided to see what it was all about.

When I clicked on that menu launcher, it just opened LO to a blank "new"
Writer document.  So, that was no clue.

So do any of you know what this is all about?  I wonder what it really
was for and why it was a hidden option for my "Other" menu in the
"Applications" menu.

The package named "libreoffice-filter-mobiledev" is responsible. It's description
states it gives LO ability to open files created with "AportisDoc (Palm)",
"PocketWord" and "PocketExcel". I assume these are apps for some smartphones.

Because this package has no binaries on it's own, so there basically is
nothing to invoke from menu.

This hidden entry is created by
/usr/share/applications/libreoffice-javafilter.desktop file. It's only purpose is
to register few mimetypes in global mimetype database and associate them with
LO Writer. This way if you ever happen to have file from one of said programs,
your file manager (Nautilus, perhaps) will know that it is supposed to run LO
Writer. But because of .desktop files works, side-effect of this will be entry
in "start" menu. So they put another keyword to hide this entry from user's
view. If they did not, then there would be more questions similar to these you
have asked ;) .
